Me! Being a chemist and event planner might seem like a stretch, but when you think about it, it makes sense. A successful event planner must be creative, flexible and detail-oriented, and my experience blends all of these characteristics.
Finding the Right Chemistry
My love for numbers and solving problems allowed me to study chemistry and mathematics. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1988 from Lincoln University of Missouri. After graduation, I was hired as an analytical chemist with the FDA and decided to complete my Chemistry Degree in May 1993 from University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Although chemistry and mathematics provided me with a current career; I've always dreamed of owning my own business.
And the Jazz in me...
My love for jazz developed from spending time listening to my mom and brother discuss jazz music. I began to appreciate jazz– the vocals, the artists, the lyrics, and the improvisation. Saturday afternoons became jazz days in our home. I learned about different jazz musicians such as Billy Eckstein, Billie Holiday and Etta James, and later I learned to enjoy other musicians. Our evenings were spent at coffee shops, record shops like Vintage Vinyl or local book stores shopping for new and old jazz or blues CD’s. On weekends we often attended jazz or blues concerts.
My Entrepreneurial Spirit At a very early age I developed my skills as an entrepreneur by working with family members who owned small businesses. I got my first feel of planning parties while attending Lincoln, and I loved it! My last year at Lincoln University I started planning events; after graduating I realized that my colleagues, friends and family members always included me in on the planning of parties, social weekends, and class reunion etc. I dreamed of being an event planner and creating fabulous events for others. In my mid-twenties I formed a catering company with my mother; by thirty I dedicated myself to acquiring the skills to become a successful business woman by serving in leadership positions in numerous organizations and continuing my education. After years of planning social and special events and taking business courses specializing in entrepreneurship, convention and special event planning, I launched my event planning business, Jazzmin’s, in November 2010 at the St. Louis Ameristar Casino.
Why Did You Name Your Business Jazzmin’s?
I surveyed close friends and they came up with some great business names for me, but none really told my story. I asked myself – what do you like? What do you love? And I came up with my business name – Jazzmin’s Event Planning Group. Jazzmin's is a combination of family, family memories and jazz music.
The answer to the question…what do I like? And what do I love? – goes back to my family…
Anyone who knows me, knows that family is #1. I spend most of my weekends with family. The dynamics of my family have changed, my mom passed in 2006 but now I have three nieces and two nephews. I spend weekends with the kids and their parents. My first niece was born in August 2004 and her name is Jasmyn.
